The most well known chorals and hymns from classical music’s golden age, stand as the foundation for one of the most innovative and exciting musical collaborations in contemporary jazz.
Renowned German jazz instrumentalists, Markus Burger (piano) and Jan von Klewitz (saxophone), blend modern improvisation with the art of interpreting baroque music, while remaining true to its original musical integrity.
The duo, who began their collaboration in 2000, have been touring the world extensively in support of their project, performing to sold-out audiences year after year, from Germany to Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Ukraine, Lithuania, France, Poland, Iceland, and most recently, North America.
Burger and von Klewitz are the winners of the coveted Bach Award, given by the City of Erfurt in Germany, for their innovative interpretation of the composer’s most notable body of work. They were also invited to perform at two renowned Bach festivals - Leipzig and Arndstadt.
Their self-titled debut album, Spiritual Standards, reached the top 20th place in the German classical charts, following its release in 2000.
Most recently, Burger and von Klewitz had the distinguished honor of being selected as musical ambassadors for the ‘Luther Decade,’ a 10-year cultural celebration showcase, sponsored by the German State of Saxony-Anhalt, designed to mark the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation.
Focusing on different cultural themes to showcase, from art to music of the Reformation era, the ‘Luther Decade’ aims to raise awareness for Saxony-Anhalt as a travel and investment destination, and to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to ‘Luther Country’ for the main 500th anniversary celebration event, in 2017.
